Scattered like pearls in the clear blue waters of the South Pacific, the Fiji archipelago is at the cross roads of the world’s largest ocean. Though discovered by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1643, these islands, set amongst uncharted waters and known as ‘The Cannibal Isles’, were carefully avoided by mariners and
more than 100 years passed before the British showed any interest, later olonising the island and bringing over indentured labourers from India. Present-day Fijians are descended from View from the Vatulele Island Resort these as well as indigenous Melanesians, and visitors now receive a much warmer welcome,
with islanders genuinely friendly with a relaxed attitude to life. Part of this must be due to their idyllic environment. Jungle-clad mountains rise up over turquoise lagoons, offshore coral reefs are untouched and pristine beaches deserted.
Of the 330 islands that make up the archipelago barely 100 are inhabited, many by only a simple traditional village. If you’re after a deserted island experience this is the place to come.
